Boys Day Out

Sometimes a SAHM-slash-Dissertation-Writer needs a day off. Sometimes I need a whole week off, but a couple hours on a Saturday does wonders. According to the pictures I downloaded from the camera, while I was sleeping, swimming, hot-tubbing, and reading Lemony Snicket (book 3), the boys went to the ice skating rink.
JK, being the good Austrian he is, is both an excellent skier and ice skater. He spent his childhood winters slamming pucks into homemade nets on frozen lakes and skiing down all available hills. In contrast, my sisters and I, growing up in the south, saw snow only once in a blue moon, except for Christmases at our relatives in Indiana, where we borrowed boots from neighbor kids or lined our shoes with plastic bags. I first went skiing when I was an exchange student in Germany when our class went on a 2-week field trip to Austria to a ski camp. Since I was living in flat northern Germany, most of my fellow classmates were also ski novices, and I wasn't the only one slipping down the slopes. Although I must say, I was a slow learner. It didn't help that the ski teacher spoke with an extremly difficult to understand Austrian dialect and used words like Schikanten, which, haven spoken German for all of 6 months or so, were not in my vocabulary. (And I didn't make that good of an impression among my roommates the first morning in the dorms when we all had to make up our beds, and I said "How do you make the bed?" They must have thought that American girls are so spoiled that they never have to make their own beds. Again, my German was a bit lacking and I really meant, "We don't use duvets and duvet covers in my plain-Jane American household and my host mother in Hamburg usually makes the bed for me. So I am not sure how to stuff this incredibly fluffy feather comforter into this tiny sack.")
To return to the story, JK is an excellent skater, so I wasn't worried about him taking JT out on the ice. But they went to the beach instead, since there was a skating competition going on.

BBU: He made up a sign for flower: he puts his hand up to his nose and sniffs. (Thanks, M, for the scratch-and-sniff book, he LOVES it!) Its pretty funny. I will try and get it on tape and add video to this blog, like all the other cool moms.

I was really wondering why he was sitting on the beach as I was reading about the boys going ice skating! Great picture!
