So the piddling amounts of rain we got did nothing to help replenish the moisture here. According to the news, in some places, the humidity is at 3%. (Less than 30% leads to dry skin and thirst.)
Yesterday JK noticed that the light seemed strange as we drove home from the Y - orange-tinted. Then later as he was hammering away on JK's swingset, I came out to see what new amusements he had decided to create for JT, when I noticed a burning smell. Neither of us put two and two together and came up with wildfires. Not until we turned on Desp. Housewives, did we realize that San Diego was burning.
The fire to the South is right where we were Saturday after we went on the "Pumpkin Express." Seppi had even thought about camping, but it was windy the last time we camped there, so fortunately we didn't.
The Santa Ana winds are quite bad, and tonight it is very windy, but at least it has cooled off a bit.
The fires in the north (there are multiple) have burned over 100 structures. Our friend, M, lives in the evacuation area, so she has brought her cat, James, and is staying with us until things calm down.
A few blocks from JK's office the church burnt down, but as far as we know his office is still standing, but the fire is somewhere nearby.
JT's school, as well as the university and pretty much all public schools in SD County are closed due to poor air quality.
Luckily at our house, there is only a small tinge of campfire in the air. But it is so dry that the earth nearly sighed as I watered our small seedlings.
JT and JK have no put together some small items to take to Qualcomm Stadium for the evacuees there - a blanket, towel, food, and stuffed animals.
It has been a sad day here. I'll post an update soon.

i'm glad you guys are ok and able to help out. the pictures are overwhelming - it's hard to imagine how different our drive through malibu this summer is from the current reality. keep us posted. we're thinking of ya!
