A Little Trouble (maker)

See how cute he can be? And then I pick him up at school and his teachers have to talk to me about his "behavior." Yeah, just call him out in front of all the other kids and parents. Nice. And no asking me if maybe there was something that might be bothering him since he wasn't being himself. No. He was just uncooperative all day. Not listening to the teachers. Not participating. Not sitting still for circle time. Rolling onto other kids during circle time. Apparently he had to be removed to the office during circle time. !!! I guess that was their last option. I am assuming that they tried redirecting and other problem-solving techniques. Then again, the school IS full and often the teachers are trying to do many things at once, so he has less personal attention. So now I thinking that maybe a different format of preschool would be better for him.
In any case, he and I had a nice talk about trying harder tomorrow. I tried not to say "and you'll be a good boy" even though that was what I was thinking. Just listen better. Try harder at listening and doing what the teachers ask.

Today I also read this article in the NYTimes. Turns out that he has inherited picky-eating-ness from me, not that I didn't already know that. Yes, I ate "white rice with soy sauce" for many Sunday lunches at the Chinese restaurant. Corn was my favorite vegetable for many, many years. And I remember filling in a book "about me" that asked what I would serve for Thanksgiving - my mom's hamburger-chip-dip dish. (I think that would be a kind of ground beef stroganoff.) We also used to eat some sort of chipped beef on toast. I liked that, too. And back to picky-eating...I am not the only picky eater in our family! Yes, auntie M had a list of approved foods on the refrigerator. Is it still there? And wasn't cookie dough a main staple for several years? I am glad to say that the pickiness does wear off. We had chicken piccata for dinner with brown rice medley. Not bad!

I guess I am no longer so upset about the school thing. I just hate being attacked as soon as I walk in the door. And Julian looked pretty sad when I picked him up. :(

Poor thing. He's not even 3 yet and he's expected to sit still? Is this a common occurance ("sent to the office") or just an off day? Seems like they should be more understanding for an off day.

Yes, the list is still there! But I am proof that pickiness does wear off - I ate red meat for the first time in about 6 years - still not a fan, but I did it. As for those juicy red things, not going to happen anytime soon I think!! -Auntie M

hmm. my first recipe was spaghetti, complete with sauce from the jar and an iceberg lettuce salad with baco-bits on the side. funny how tastes change, although i still like that meal. i just add things to the sauce and use spinach in my salad now.
how is the troublemaker's garden growing? i think we all have off days. i'm just glad there's not an official time-out spot at work.
