In an effort to make staying at home with 3 kids for the summer somewhat more tolerable for all of us, I thought we could have some themes to our weeks. (But not themes in the sense of some crafty-blogging thing with matching shirts, food and theme songs. Ours were very loose themes.)
The middle child (Tiny) still asks whether it is a school day nearly everyday after he gets up. (Answer: yes, but you are on summer break. Counter questions: what is summer break? What is summer? How long is a month/a weel/ a day/ 24 hours/etc.?)
Week 1 camp's theme: USA. (We are so creative around here.)
We went to the library and checked out books on the US. The kids picked up their prizes for the summer reading program. The each got tickets for several museums, a Padres game and a Frisbee.
Our next activity was a visit to the Air and Space Museum in Balboa Park.
Then there was the 4th of July neighborhood parade: down the street and back and then the checking out of a firetruck and police car.
And because the kids are too crazy at home, we went to the zoo along with 500,000 other people. We had to park in an overflow lot and when we came out our car was wedged between 2 rows, leading me to believe that we would have to stay at the zoo until the other car owners came out. But actually, valet parking was just using the area and an attendant came over and freed us.
The new Australian exhibit was nice (Kaolafornia!) and we even braved the sun to watch the 'Zoo at Night' show (no, it was not night) that featured acrobats in cute koala costumes and a Paul Dundee type who snapped his whip and then 'flew' around in his jeans and leather vest, holding onto a rope with one hand. (Maybe I need a Netflix Crocodile Dundee evening...)
And that was it. The kids also reviewed their quarter collections (again) and collectively watched several hours of "The Suite Life on Deck" (a tweenie show with twin boys, which you may have never seen if you are not a tween or do not have a tween) and several episodes of "Dinosaur Train" (this one is a kids' cartoon with dinosaurs who ride a train into various time periods) in prep for the next week.... dinosaurs!
