Frugal Friday, er, Saturday
So, over at Misadventures, Sarah was asking for people to blog for Frugal Friday. I thought it would be fun to post something. But honestly, I couldn't think of any frugal tips that you (my hypothetical audience) probably haven't already heard. If you happened to read the Parade insert in the Sunday paper last week, there was an article about frugal families explaining how the families lived on small incomes. Most of their tips were not tips that most people would opt for - for example, one woman got her hair cut twice a year with a coupon for $7.99. Now, if you just have long hair and wear it hanging down or in a ponytail, that is an acceptable solution. But since I have decided to go back to somewhat short, that just doesn't cut it. Let's see, another tip I heard recently was coupon shopping - one woman only bought on sale and with double or triple coupons. Well, since we like to buy LOTS of fresh fruit and vegetables - no coupons. If you want high fructose corn syrup and processed foods, well, there are lots of coupons. Once in a while I use a coupon, and I do comparison shop the ads before going - so I sometimes end up at 3 grocery stores in one week - Henry's for produce, Von's for basics, and Trader Joe's for cereal, frozen fruit, coffee and alcoholic beverages. Seems like a lot of work, but these stores are pretty much on the way home from JT's school or we can walk.
So, since I couldn't think of anything amazing, I will go with the old standby - composting! I am amazed at how much we put in the composter. We don't have a garbage disposal, so everything would have gone in the trash. We just keep a yogurt container next to the sink and take it out every night and water the whole thing once in a while (we live in deserty-conditions). And once every six months or so we take out the lush, brown compost and spread it around our plant beds. There are lots of composters out there - tumblers, boxes, etc., so there should be an option for everyone. Happy composting!
