...and better than ever. Or maybe just a bit tireder than usual. Or is that more tired?
Did you catch the New Hampshire debates this evening? We just watched the Republican debate, which was interesting, since we weren't sure who some of the candidates were. (With some googling we are now better informed.) They all seemed to have fun attacking Romney.
I guess the Democratic debate is next? The debates must be long over on the East Coast. The news guy just said that Barack Obama was a surfer. Interesting tidbit there.
I just took a quiz over at the Washington Post - choose your candidate. I tried the democratic version, but you can also take the republican version. Apparently I am sympathetic to both Oprah's fave and Bill Richardson. So now we will see what they have to say. Anything new?
In other news, we returned from a great visit with the extended family in Indiana. The weather was somewhat cooperative, although JT was disappointed that he didn't get to make a snowman. He did get the chance to play with some ice and some snow, and then on New Year's Day he insisted on walking in the cold, windy snow over to his great-aunt's house. My dad tried to pick him up in the car twice, but to no avail.
We enjoyed seeing all our relatives (all minus one uncle), going to my cousin's wedding, singing Christmas carols at grandma's house, eating all the delicious homemade goodies, and playing lots of games. What would family get-togethers be without games?
We then braved the cold for one last night in Indianapolis and were happy to return to sunny San Diego. (JT on the whole ride from LAX: "Let's go home. I want to go home.") We even had to turn on the air conditioner for a while.
Of course, I then had to spend an entire afternoon cleaning up cat hair, etc. Two cats trapped in a house produce all sorts of messes to take care of. And then the winter storm hit. Ha. First they said it was going to pour 12 inches of rain starting Friday morning. Nope. I got to play soccer yesterday in the non-rain-iness. (Our opponents played rough. One guy tripped me and fell on top of me, squishing me into the plastic turf and rubbing the tops of my knees into the ground. So now I have skinned tops-of-the-knees. Nice.) But it was raining much of today, just not the inches and inches that were promised.
The debate is starting off with a question about nuclear terrorism. My opinion: let's not think about invading Western Pakistan. No thanks. We are already in enough mess in Afghanistan and Iraq. Mr. Obama, just say no! "Al Qaeda" is not "in" one place in Pakistan. Pakistan is in trouble at the moment, we need to focus more long-term and in context. Go, Clinton - we have tried to take BL out before and oops - missed! And didn't he escape out a cave or something?
Another topic: Its a new year. A time of resolutions and revisions to our lives. The hubster and I want to both lose a few pounds and get back in shape. When I was younger, I always listened to my aunts talking about the various diets they were on when we saw them at Christmas. I would just eat another cookie and wonder why they tortured themselves. Ah, the days of good metabolism. This Christmas I let myself enjoy the delicious goodies (cookies, cheeseball, cassaroles, fudge, chex mix...) with the thought that I would have to be more disciplined in January. I will contine with my campaign to "eat more vegetables!" and eat less meat and sweets. I am also trying to reduce the processed foods and refined sugar we eat and to eat as little meat as possible. JK goes to the gym twice a week and sometimes a third. I think he needs to up his workout slowly. I need to get to the gym period. I know that I have neglected going and used many excuses. Since I am retiring from soccer, I am losing that exercise time. We will have to come up with a plan that works for the whole family.
JT will be attending German preschool two days a week starting Thursday. So his resolution is to learn German. To help him, JK and I will have to speak German more often together at home, we will have to read German books more often, and I think we will also meet with some of the other German-speaking families that live nearby. That seems like a family goal.
I will also try to write everyday. Hopefully much of that writing will be for my dissertation. But the writing could also be for this blog or some fiction pieces I am working on. Or rather, had been working on in previous years.
I also resolve to think more positively and live in a way that I feel most creates the world I would like to live in: using resources responsibily, treating others with compassion, and using my time to do things that make myself and others happy. Hopefully this will mean I can try and make some more crafty things, work in the garden, and do some tasty canning and cooking. And maybe I will finish my degree or at least make peace with finding a different occupation.
In conclusion, a conversation overheard between JT and his father today:
Papa: JT, do you want to go to the train store?
JT: But I can't go by myself because I don't know how to drive the car.
Papa: We can go together. To the one by Henry's.
JT: The Henry on TV or the one on the movie?
Bonus points if you know which Henry he was referring to!

no bonus points for me - who's henry?
i look forward to seeing how the resolutions go - don't forget to enjoy the journey as well as the end-goal.
p.s. i am more tireder...
Henry who? Glad y'all are back safe and sound!
so it is Indiana - already wondered what you were doing in India ;-) Love your blog and hope you will continue with it also in the face of all your other plans. But quite honestly - which weight do you want to loose? You two appear skinny as can be.
Happy new year and all our love
Julia (Paul and Arnold)
