We finally got some rain and some fall weather! How exciting. It hasn't rained since we've been back from Austria, and I am not sure it rained while we were gone, so those were some loooong drought months. Unfortunately it only rained enough to get the top 2 cm or so of soil wet, but it was enough to loosen it so I can work on the garden some more. There has been talk about the water supply in SD - there is a special fish in one resevoir and if they try to protect the fish, our supply will gretaly reduced. But there are no mandatory water conservation efforts here. Supposedly 60% of the water goes into landscaping. It wouldn't be bad if commercial landscaping had a mandated 50% xerioscaping or native plants and drought-resistant landscaping. Our front yard is mostly drought-resistant, but it does need watering once every week and a half, and in the backyard we have thirsty roses and some other plants as well as the grass. Somehow a yard without grass is difficult to imagine. Still, when you turn on the sprinkler the next time, you might want to think about the "greenness" of your yard.
In other water news, our drinking water has had an earthy, musty smell and flavor for about a month now. The water company says it is due to a algae bloom at one of the resevoirs. It is like taking a shower with lake water, but we have gotten used to drinking it. (The Brita doesn't filter out the flavor.) How refreshing!

Just before we left, a full watering ban started because the river water must be released at a mandated rate to keep alive some endangered fish downstream, but we haven't had enough rain to sustain that amount and also keep the reservoir lakes filled. And did you see how fast Greenland and the Artic ice is melting?
The more we know about such things, the more we need to know! And care. And act. It is still hard to believe the toilet used 33K gal of water! If it made it thru the treatment center, it might help the fish swim. Oh well..

We are having a very warm fall here. Yesterday it broke a heat record. We had 94. Rain is predicted for today and tomorrow and yes we can use it. I saw a farmer in the field yesterday discing and it looked like a dust storm. Give the little engineer a big hug for me.

that ice cream float thingy looks really good. hmmm. ice cream. and i love the way someone's hair is all curly, flipped out at the edges. :)
i'm not so sure I'd enjoy the lake water effect at home, but it would probably be about as close as i get to a real lake these days.
