While the rest of the nation is covered in fluffy white stuff, we are enjoying winter sun here. The weather in SD is never quite what you expect. When I first moved here, I had visions of sun and bikinis year round, and it was chilly in August (or whatever month it was I arrived). Well, chilly compared to the humid south -- I had to put on a cardigan. And some months of summer are gloomy and cool. And some winter days are sunny and 80 degrees. Perfect for the beach.
JT and Mr. Burli went yesterday and they had so much fun, JT requested that we go again today.
The weekend was nice. We worked in the yard some, preparing a bed in the section behind the garage. We dug out at least 2 large buckets of broken tiles, some rusty pipes, and a large plastic bag. We've decided to try some phytoremediation back there to try to clean up any leftover yuckiness left in the soil.
Phytoremediation refers to the use of plants to mediate an environmental problem, in case you are wondering. I am thinking of planting a crop of sunflowers. Now, we don't actually know what is in our soil - lead, oil, whatever may have been tossed in when the previous owners gutted the backyard and smoothed it over, but it seems like a neat idea. (Of course, I only know about it after googling 'use plants to clean soil'. Got to love the internet!)

Boys and the beach--what a great combo! is JT jumping over the erosion line? and the egg seems to be getting smaller!
The yard is coming along nicely and a field of sunflowers--ah, provence? The bearded burly gardener has worn out his helper!
Enjoy the sun and the warmth; it is cold here and we have only 2 large snowball snowman carcasses left in the yard. Wait a minute--I see a few snowflakes flittering down--they weren't in the forecast!

So I'm on my 9th snow day today and would love a trip to the beach...its a bit too cold here for swimsuits and laying out. Best wishes for the plant clean up; hopefully you don't have a Love Canal situation in that part of the yard. Let us know how it progresses.

I see baby S is following along in the fashion footsteps of older brother and also loves the overalls. Super cute! The beach looks wonderfully fun!
Chris you need to research the sunflower. I read that the roots will harm some vegetables. Just a thought. We have another chilly day here with a high 0f 55 and NNW wind. Not a day to enjoy the beach here. Hopefully by the weekend we can get out of this pattern and enjoy some time outdoors.
Love, Gma/gtgma
