Going for Green
In efforts to increase our green-ness, JK built a fancy compost bin. I thought it a bit too large for our little yard, but what do I know about composting? Perhaps it will work out well. But first he has to finish the lids. Especially since last night he called me out to the yard to see "this animal" that had jumped from the tree - an opossum. We have quite the collection of wildlife here, even if we are in a somewhat urban area.
Today it was hot again. So we set up the sprinkler after breakfast. It hasn't rained since February or something. Maybe it did sprinkle while we were in Austria, but it hasn't *really* rained in quite a while. Still, we are only on voluntary water reduction. We have a big bucket in the shower to collect the cool water while waiting for the water heater to kick in. We throw that on various plants, and after JT's bath, I usually scoop up his bath water, too. Maybe it helps a little. And the plants in the front yard are almost all drought-resistant, so they can get by on a watering a week, but the grass in the backyard is suffering. (It grows well in the shade of the orange tree, though!)

wow - that is a fancy composter. will you post instructions on how to use it too? it sort of looks like a mini-dunking booth with the way they are sitting in there. i wonder if it is easier to be in the habit of recycling, composting, etc. after living in Europe? we try to do the basics, but it can be frustrating when only plastics numbered 1 or 2 can go in the bin and that container you just got done rinsing is a 4 or 7 or something odd.
our house came with a composter, but nothing like that!
What all can you put in the composter? All your food scraps?
We were at the Jazz festival this weekend and all the bowls, plates & silverware were the biodegradable corn plastics. It said they would biodegrade in 18mos in a composter.
