Breakfast entertainment.
If you get up early enough, the sun hasn't quite made it up all the way and hits the side of the mountain in a beautiful orange-y, pinkish glow.
"I have a mustache." (A green smoothie mustache, in case you wondered.)
Bighorn sheep. We only saw this one. He came all the way down the man-made pond near the start of the trail to get a drink. (Hmm, fall is breeding season - maybe he was looking for a mate. We didn't see any, but then again, the sheep completely blend into the landscape. We might have missed him if it hadn't been for JT's fall off a palm tree trunk that was lying among the larger boulders in the wash area (where a flood went through in the early 2000s and washed out a lot of the native palms from the canyon). He emerged with quite a few splinters embedded in his hand, and we ended up walking back to the campsite, soaking his hand, and attempting to pull them out. Our friend poured copious amounts of something on them to avoid infection. And she also gave him homeopathic arnica globuli (like nonpareils), which allowed him to stop crying (and ask for more off those "sugar balls.") In any case, he insisted we go on with the hike, and it is a good thing we did, because Mr. Burli and Tiny had already gone ahead and I had all their snacks.
(Can you spot JT in this one?)
The weather was absolutely perfect this time - no crazy wind like last Easter. And relaxing around the campfire was especially nice with some friends to talk to! (It also helped that the bigger boys went in the tent and watched a movie. They were so amazingly energetic together. It was almost like two tiny tornadoes in a little reagent glass. (Except they were in the wide open desert, which is not at all like a reagent glass.)

It is amazing how beautiful the desert can be! Surprised that Tiny and the big horn posed alike! And JT and his friend must have loved leaping all over the place! Papa too?
Your pictures are great.
love, momsie
Wow, it's so beautiful! I think I need to plan a trip there. Thanks for sharing.
I want to go on that hike - things here don't look like that at all. I had to look really hard to find JT!
you and steph both manage to make camping look not only feasible, but enticing. cut that out! ;-p (also, loved the "reagent glass" imagery.)
bicrussiI loved the pictures and it looked like you all had a great time. Maybe I need to put this place on my bucket list to see.
Love, GmaH
